Introducing

Gloucestershire Steam & Traction Engine Company (GSTEC)

Originally established in 1989, as G.D. Precision Engineering, the companies core business was as a subcontract engineering company supplying components to the Aerospace & Defence industries and Spirax Sarco (manufacturers of steam vales etc.).

The move into model engineering and the establishment of GSTEC, was brought about by a request from a former colleague from Dowty Fuel Systems who needed a set of gears for a 4" scale Foster traction engine he was building. Having served a technical apprenticeship, the principals of gear cutting and machining techniques made this possible.

From that first request, a commission to finish a part built 3" scale Burrell soon followed.

Eight years later having built engines from 3" to 6" scale, model engineering now makes up 80% of the companies business. The formation of the GSTEC gave the business new momentum and resulted in commissions to build various 4" scale traction engines.

Engines have been built for the UK and exported to Canada, Holland and Germany

In recent years we have started to produce our own range of models, the first being the impressive 6" scale Foster which was rallied extensively throughout the south west in 1997, this engine is now owned by Noel Kane from Northern Ireland.

The Clayton & Shuttleworth engines were the next step in developing the companies fine range of models. These models are available as Agricultural Engines, Road Locomotives and Two Types of Crane Engine.

A new engine is currently under development this being a 5 Inch Scale Radial Valve Compound 3 Speed Road Locomotive. (this engine has a boiler of 12.750" diameter and is comparable with most 6 Inch Scale Engines)

We able to offer the model engineering enthusiast a fully comprehensive service from boiler manufacture to finished engines, full technical support as well as a machining service for engines from 3" scale to 6" scale. Quality Castings and drawings at competitive prices.

Model Engines specified in the catalogue are constructed using steel boilers (note Copper is not recommended), which are all manufactured in-house to the latest European specifications and are supplied with full certification including an independent hydraulic test certificate.

Wheels are supplied as steel bands with welded rings to produce original T sections, they therefore require no further machining, although light dressing with an angle grinder may improve appearance.

Wheel spokes, hornplates, tender sides, belly tanks etc., are supplied laser cut and require no finishing Cylinder Blocks are supplied with steam ways cast in, making machining far more straight forward. Gears can be supplied fully machined with all keyways etc., ready to assemble to shafts, or as un-machined gear blanks for your machining, Bevels and Pinion gears are fully machined as standard.

Any component required to build these engines can be supplied part or fully machined, we hope you will find an engine to suit your requirements.
